STAR Certificate Program: Endoscopic Mucosal Resection - Upper GI

The ASGE STAR Certificate Program is designed to provide standardized, evidence based education, training and assessment in specific endoscopy skills. This program targets practicing physicians who seek to improve their endoscopy practice and skills.  Participants will be expected to complete all components of the curriculum in sequence.  At the conclusion of the program, participants will receive a transcript of the activities they have completed and their performance on the cognitive and skills assessment components of the program. Participants who pass the assessment components will receive a certificate of completion. Results of all assessments (online and live) as well as credit earned will be tracked through this online system. Please refer to this site when looking for a status of your progress, credits awarded and transcript for the program.


Target Audience:

The enrollment criteria described below is intended to give potential participants an idea of the basic skill levels expected of program participants, and the skills that are needed to successfully perform Upper EMR. Enrollees should have:

  • A minimum of two years in practice post-fellowship
  • Performed at least 500 colonoscopies independently, and currently performing colonoscopy as part of daily practice
  • Proficiency in basic polypectomy, hemostasis, and injection techniques
  • Enrollees are expected to be proficient in band ligation, hemostasis, use of clips, and saline-lift-polypectomy

Learning Objectives:

As a result of completing this activity, physicians will be able to:

  • Describe the morphology of large or complex mucosal lesions of the stomach and small bowel (excluding Barrett's and ampullary lesions) and assesss their endoscopic appearance for resectability
  • Appropriately select and demonstrate the use of various techniques in the endoscopic mucosal resection (including Cap and Band ligator-assisted EMR) of these lessions
  • Demonstrate the use of appropriate accessories for managemernt of adverse events
  • Select apprpriate surveillance intervals based on current guidelines
